Did you know that C.W. Henry has a school garden?
The C.W. Henry School Garden was launched in the spring of 2010 in partnership with the Farm Education program of Weaver’s Way Community Programs’ (WWCP). Located behind the staff parking lot, adjacent to the kindergarten playground, the garden was started by Henry parents who share an interest in revitalizing the school grounds to both improve the appearance of the school and to use the land to enrich the curriculum. As funds allow, a limited number of classes take part in educational sessions with the farm educator and all classes are welcome to visit the garden and use the space as part of their classroom curriculum.
Since its inception in 2010, the garden has produced a variety of organic fruits, vegetables and herbs. Perennial plantings include: figs, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, goji berries, asparagus, rosemary, oregano, chives and thyme. Annual plantings vary year to year with the student favorites of tomatoes, sweet peppers, kale, collards, broccoli, cucumbers, beans, lettuces, peas, garlic and potatoes in seasonal rotation. During the school year, the harvest is shared with Henry students, staff and families. Produce harvested during the summer months is given to garden volunteers, neighbors and local food banks.
The garden is a wonderful natural resource for hands-on teaching about science, horticulture, healthy eating, the life cycle, insects, weather, math and economics while building teamwork, positive peer relationships and stronger community. Since 2010, hundreds of Henry students have participated in educational sessions with Farm Educator, David Siller.
We need your help to keep this valuable program growing as an outdoor learning resource for teachers and students.
Volunteers are needed to help with planning, student instruction in the garden, and ongoing garden activities. If you don’t have time to volunteer but would still like to help, we are also in need of garden tools, tool storage, and cash donations to purchase garden supplies and to fund additional instructional time with the Farm Educator.
If you are able to help, please contact Kelly Tannen, Parent Garden Coordinator, at kbtannen (at) hotmail (dot) com or 484.432.5087.
