Welcome to C. W. Henry School’s Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students)

Charles W. Henry Elementary School and the C.W. Henry PTA are excited to support the Watch D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) program at our school. WATCH D.O.G.S. is the safe schools initiative of the National Center for Fathering that involves fathers and father figures to help create a more safe and secure learning environment in our schools.

The program is overseen by our “Top Dog”, Michael Burrell, who partners with Robin Roberts (parent) to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for Watch D.O.G.S. to provide assistance at the school.  Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including helping in the classrooms, doing flashcards, small group reading, experiments and projects, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, helping with lunch and recess, as well as monitoring the school.

Here at Henry, we have 43 fathers and father figures who represent 63 students. Congratulations!!

What is Watch D.O.G.S.?
Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative program of the National Center for Fathering focused on improving education in our nation’s schools by using the influence of fathers and father-figures to provide a positive & active male role-model for students during their school day.

Who can become a Watch D.O.G.S at C.W. Henry Elementary?
Any father, step-father, grandfather, uncle, or father-figure of a Henry student can sign up to be a Watch D.O.G.S.

How can I learn more about becoming a Watch D.O.G.S?
There are two kickoff events: The Pizza Night in Fall and Donuts and Dads in the Spring. You can become a volunteer at any time though. Please contact our coordinators Michael Burrell or Robin Roberts.

How long is a Watch D.O.G.S day?
The day begins at 8:15 am and lasts until approximately 3:09 pm.

How many days does a Watch D.O.G.S volunteer?
Watch D.O.G.S. are asked to volunteer at least one day throughout the school year but are encouraged to come as often as they are able.

How can I schedule a date to volunteer?
You can add your name to the main schedule in the main office. Please email Robin Roberts so that she can make a note of your day to do your schedule.

How can I see what day I signed up?
You can stop in the main office to see the calendar.

Do I have to buy a Watch D.O.G.S shirt?
Yes, a Watch DOG Shirt is a required uniform to be worn during your volunteer day(s). Any additional Watch DOG items are optional.

How do I order a Watch D.O.G.S. shirt?

How much do shirts cost?
Shirts cost $15.00.

What do Watch D.O.G.S. do at Charles W. Henry?
Before your volunteer day you will receive a personalized schedule to follow throughout your day. You will receive a brief orientation when you arrive.

What does a typical Watch D.O.G.S schedule look like?
Typically you will:

• Assist with car duty or bus duty in the morning
• Volunteer in several classrooms throughout the day
• Monitor the hallways
• Help with lunch and recess

In addition to eating lunch with your student, you will be volunteering in your student(s) classroom at least one time during the day.
